John Speak was the son of John and Ruth Speak, formerly Starkie, née Uttley. John, senior, was born at Colden near Heptonstall, Yorkshire and Ruth at Walsden, Lancashire.

1881 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: Hill Street - John Speak, aged 10 months, born Todmorden [sic], Yorkshire, son of John and Ruth Speak.

1891 Nelson, Lancashire Census: 56, Victoria Street - John Speak, aged 10 years, born Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, son of John and Ruth Speak.
