George William Alcock was the son of George and Hannah Alcock, née Mortimer. George, senior, was born at Bradford and Hannah at Rufforth, Yorkshire. George William served as John William Allcock. His name was corrected by the CWGC on 28 February 2020.

1901 Holbeck Township, Leeds, Yorkshire Census: 12, Runswick Street - William Alcock aged 16 years, born Acomb, Yorkshire. [George William was living with his sister Martha Rachel and brother-in-law, Michael Palfreeman.]
George was married to Kate Rose Smith in 1907. [In the 1911 Census, Kate and her children, Minnie and Ernest, are recorded as inmates at Great Ouseburn Union Workhouse.]

The 1921 Census shows that Kate Allcock [sic] and her children were living at 6, Fourth Court, Bridge Road, Holbeck, Leeds. Kate married John Robert Gallacher in 1922. The 1939 Register shows that Kate, husband John and their son John W. [Walter] were living at 29, Bateson Street, Rothwell, Leeds. Kate died in 1966. Kate and George’s son, Gunner Ernest Alcock Gallacher, 1549518, 125 Bty., 38 Lt. A.A. Regt., Royal Artillery, died 9 November 1943. He is buried in Tel El Kabir War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Edna Bell (see above) the 'fiancée' of George who lived at 6, George Street, Skipton, may have met George, whom she knew as John, when he was stationed there with the 16th (Service) Bn Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (1st Bradford). Edna lost two brothers in the Great War: Private Arthur Bell (90926) (q.v.) and Private Walter William Bell (256877) (q.v.).
The 1921 Census shows that Edna was living with her mother, Jane, at 6, George Street, Skipton. Edna married John Boardman in 1928. The 1939 Register shows that Edna and John were living at the above address. Edna died in 1984.
George is commemorated as George W. Alcock on Acomb Green War Memorial and as William Alcock on Acomb Methodist Church War Memorial.
Early in 1918 Machine Gun Battalions were formed. This was done by bringing 4 Machine Gun Companies together to form a battalion. The battalion then took the number of their Division.
