SAD HOMES AT CHATBURN

TWO SOLDIERS' SUCCUMB TO WOUNDS

On Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, Victoria Avenue, Chatburn, received a letter from the Sisters of the 10th O.C.C.S. Hospital France, informing them of the sad fact that their eldest son, Private Wm. H. Wilson died there on the 13th inst. He was admitted on the 12th, in an unconscious state, suffering from severe wounds to the chest and right arm, and never regained consciousness. Twenty-two years of age, Private Wilson joined up in January, 1916. He was attached to the 1/4 York and Lancaster Regt. He had previously been wounded and, in his last letter, written two weeks before his death, he stated that he was that day leaving hospital, and expected to be sent to a convalescent home. Of a quiet disposition, he was well-known in the Slaidburn Valley, being formerly in the employ of Mr. T. Walker, Field Head, Slaidburn.

Further distressing news reached Chatburn on Wednesday, when Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson, 3, Robinson street, were notified of the death at Salonica, from wounds, of their son, Pte. John W. Atkinson. Joining up on attaining his 19th birthday in August, 1916, he was attached to the 11th Worcester Regiment. Originally a home service man, he was despatched to Salonica for garrison duty, and the news of his death was the first intimation to his parents that he had been in danger. His letters had been very bright and cheery, and never had he complained. Quiet and unassuming, he was popular among his fellow workers at Victoria Mill who received the news of his demise with great regret.
