EARBY BUTCHER KILLED IN FRANCE

News of the death of a well-known Earby tradesman, Private J.W. Ogden, York and Lancs. Regiment, was received last weekend by his wife, who lives at 8, Boot Street, Earby.

He was 39 years of age, and had been at the Front about three months. He leaves two children.

In a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Ogden, Lieut. C.J.H. Druitt writes:– “He was attached to this Company for special duties, and at the time was with a working party in the front line trenches acting as orderly to the officer in charge, who was wounded by the same explosion. Had it not been for this circumstance I have no doubt the officer would have written you himself, and been able to give you more details than it is possible for me to do. The other men present, however, assured me that your husband’s death was quite instantaneous, and that he was spared any pain.”
