SEDBERGH

At a meeting of the Education Sub-Committee on Wednesday, Mr. C.E. Taylor, from the chair, said since the last meeting news had been received that Pte. J.A. Smith, of the Royal Fusiliers, had died of wounds. Mr. Smith was headmaster of the Council School, having been appointed last July. He had only been with them a short time, but had won the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was a great favourite with the children, by whom he was not only respected but loved. Only a short time ago he paid a flying visit especially to see the children and bid them good-bye. Three masters of the school had died within a comparatively short time. He proposed a vote of condolence with Mrs. Smith in her sad loss, and they could assure her that the services of her late husband as headmaster of the Council School were highly appreciated by the Education Committee. The vote was passed in silence.
