WHITEHEAD – CORK – August 12th, 1917, at the Primitive Methodist Church, by the Rev. G. Chun, Private J.H. Bowers Whitehead, of the 6th (Reserve) Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, to Edith Maud, eldest daughter of Mr. Fred Cork, Dawson Street, Skipton (by special licence).

Private J. H. B. Whitehead, Skipton

We regret to record the death in action on Friday last of Private J.H. Bowers Whitehead, West Riding Regiment, who for seven or eight years prior to enlisting in the early part of 1916, was assistant to Mr. Fred Cork, hairdresser, &c., Sheep Street, Skipton, and who some months ago married Mr. Cork’s daughter. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will go out to the bereaved widow (two of whose brothers have been killed, while a third is a prisoner of war in Germany) and mother, the latter of who lives at Embsay. Deceased was 30 years of age, and had been in France since last Easter. He was a bass vocalist of promise and was a valued member of the Embsay Wesleyan Choir, and was also superintendent of the Embsay Wesleyan Sunday School. In a letter to his wife, Lieut. T. Ashworth speaks of deceased’s popularity with his fellow men in his battalion, and adds that he will be much missed.
