Lewis was my Great Great Uncle and my Great Grandfather, his brother, Robert Wilson Cardwell was also in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was serving nearby when he heard of his brother’s death and was therefore given permission and able to attend Lewis’s funeral in Kandahar.
