Lionel Montague Hindle was the son of James Edward and Martha Hindle, née Anderson and brother of Corporal Frederic Gordon Hindle (B/23069) (q.v.). Their father was born at Campsall and mother at Kilham, Yorkshire.

1911 Leeds, Yorkshire Census: 127, Brudenell Road - Lionel Motague Hindle, single, aged 28 years, born Doncaster, Yorkshire. [Lionel (a visitor) and his brother, Frederic Gordon (a boarder) were living with Ellen Webster, widow. Victor Alan Young, Frederic's future brother-in-law, was also a boarder there.]

UK, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923: Pte Lionel Montague Hindle, 534381, 15th Co. of London. Date and cause of death: 30.12.17. Missing believed drowned. Name(s) on card(s): Dependant: Mrs Madge Hindle. Relationship: Unmarried Wife. Address: 'Dundurn' Kings Road, Walton-on-Thames.

The 1921 Census shows that Madge (born Woodplumpton, Lancashire), age 42 years and her son James G. Hindle. Father dead. (Born Fulwood, Lancashire), age 12 years 9 months, were living at 'Dundurn' Kings Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. The 1939 Register shows that Madge, widowed (born 6 May 1878) and two others were living at 22, Kings Road, Walton-on-Thames.

Lionel, along with L/Corporal John Hitchin (303162) (q.v.) and L/Corporal Henry Turner Wilkinson (S4/036171) (q.v.), died when HT 'Aragon' was torpedoed at the entrance to the port of Alexandria. A Long Preston soldier, Sapper Alfred Percy Cooper (WR/290232) (q.v.), survived the sinking of the 'Aragon' only to die later in the War.

Lionel is commemorated on Walton-on-Thames War Memorial. Lionel and Frederic are commemorated on Christ Church War Memorial, Bridlington.

HINDLE – On December 30th, 1917, aged 34, Lance-Corpl. LIONEL MONTAGUE HINDLE, London Regt., dear son of Mr. and Mrs. Hindle, 48, Quay-road, Bridlington, late of bank House, Settle, and Doncaster. Reported missing; transport torpedoed in the Mediterranean.
