Mark Dobson was the son of Francis and Mary A. Dobson, née Fisher. Francis was born at Ilkley and Mary at Kelfield, Yorkshire.

Mark was married to Eliza Howcroft in 1894. Mark and Eliza separated sometime before the beginning of the Great War. In the 1901 and 1911 censuses, their son, Francis William Dobson (born at Huddersfield, 11 January 1895), was living with his mother’s family at Hambleton near Selby, Yorkshire.
