HARGREAVES – Killed in action on the Western Front during recent operations, Corporal Maurice Hargreaves, Seaforth Highlanders, formerly of Eastburn, aged 21 years.

07 December 1917

EASTBURN SOLDIER’S SACRIFICE

Last weekend the many friends in Eastburn and district of Corporal Maurice Hargreaves learned with sincere regret that he had fallen in action on the Western Front, during operations in which his battalion of Seaforth Highlanders took part. The news was conveyed to the relatives of Corporal Hargreaves, who reside in Sun Street, Eastburn, by Mrs. John Teale, who had received a letter from her son, Thomas Teale, who was in the same regiment. During an advance the Sergeant Major of their company had seen Corporal Hargreaves fall, shot down by machine gun fire.

In a letter received since last weekend Corporal Teale states that he had been unable to gain any reassuring information, and regrets the loss of so faithful a pal as he had lost. Both were on leave and at Eastburn six weeks ago, joined up together two years ago, and were of a quintet of local young men who all at one time, November 1915, joined the famous Highland regiment. He was 21 years of age, a fine young fellow, and was a warp twister at Eastburn Mill previous to enlisting.
