SKIPTON'S ROLL OF HONOUR – GUNNER MAURICE SMITH, R.F.A.

We regret to say that on Tuesday, Mrs. Smith, 13, Pendle Street, Broughton Road, Skipton, received an intimation from the R.H. and R.F.A. Records, Woolwich, of the death from wounds, on June 24th, of her youngest son, Gunner Maurice Smith. No further details are given in the communication, and it is assumed that Pte. Smith died in hospital in France. It is three weeks since his mother had a letter from him. Deceased, who was formerly a porter at Skipton Station, joined up in October 1915, and went out to France three weeks later, since when he had seen a lot of fighting. He was a sergeant in the local Cadets, a member of the Skipton Tent of Rechabites, and attended St. Stephen’s Church, Skipton.

In a letter home, dated June 7th, he mentioned that he had been having a rough time but had been very lucky. “I am glad to say”, he proceeded, “that we have shifted them (the enemy) this time and not half either. I pity the poor blokes over the other side. It must have been like hell on earth, if not worse. It was bad enough on our side, but ten times worse on theirs. This is the third battle that has taken place on this front; and it will be the last. I think all Fritz’s hopes have gone West now.”
