COWLING – DEATH FROM HEAT STROKE

Mr. and Mrs. Noah Rishworth, Ickornshaw, Cowling, have received an intimation from the military authorities that their son, Driver Morris Rishworth, of the Royal Field Artillery, has succumbed to heat stroke while serving with His Majesty’s Forces in Mesopotamia.

Driver Rishworth joined the Colours on April 12th 1916, and after a course of training left this country for foreign service on September 18th 1916. Before joining up he was employed as a carter by Mr. Johnnie Binns, carrier, Ickornshaw, Cowling.

COWLING – In Memoriam

A service was conducted at the Parish Church on Sunday morning to the memory of the late Mrs. Wrathall, late headmistress at the Cowling Council School. A similar service was also held at the Wesleyan Church, Ickornshaw, on Sunday evening to the memory of the late Driver Morris Rishworth, of the R.F.A., who died of heat stroke in Mesopotamia. The service was conducted by the Rev. Thos. Dargue, circuit minister. The solo ‘Into Thy hands’ was sung by Miss Florence Hoyle. Mr. W. Dawson presided at the organ.

COWLING SOLDIER DIES IN MESOPOTAMIA

Mr. and Mrs. N. Rishworth have during the week received the news of the death of their son Maurice, who was with the forces in Mesopotamia. He was a driver in the No. 1 Mobile Section, 14th Division, and met his death by heat stroke. Driver Rishworth enlisted on April 12th, 1916, and went out for foreign service on Sept. 18th, 1916. Before joining the army he was employed by Mr. J. Binns, Ickornshaw, as a carter. A memorial service was held on Sunday morning last in the Ickornshaw Wesleyan Church. The service was attended by the family and a large number of friends. Rev. Thomas Dargue, of Crosshills, conducted the service and Miss Florence Hoyle rendered the solo ‘Into Thy hands.’

CRAVEN AND THE WAR

Cowling Soldiers Wounded

Rifleman Harry Rishworth, of the West Yorkshire Regiment, and who resides at Ickornshaw, was wounded in both legs and body on March 25th. He is now in a military hospital at York. He joined the forces in February, 1917, and went to France in December, 1917. Before joining the forces he was a warehouseman employed by Messrs. John Hartley, Cowling, Ltd. He had one brother [Maurice] who died in Mesopotamia, and another who was discharged from the army on account of wounds.
