CARLETON-IN-CRAVEN - NEWS FROM CARLETON SOLDIERS

Mr. I. Whitehead has received letters of appreciation from some of the 'boys.'

Gunner R. Ayrton writes:- "I again thank you for the present that I received a few days ago. It makes me think that at home the boys are not quite forgotten and you must convey my thanks to the committee for forwarding the order. I am going on very well. The weather here is splendid, sun shining all day, and nice rain in the evenings, everything looks at its best. I hope you are all keeping in the best of health."

CARLETON - Wounded

Mrs. R. Ayrton has received news of her husband, Private R. Ayrton, who is seriously wounded, and has been admitted to hospital.

10 May 1918

Gunner R. Ayrton, Carleton

The villagers of Carleton received the news with deep sorrow this weekend of the death, following wounds received in action on the Western Front, of Gunner Richard Ayrton, with whose widow and son full sympathy is felt. The information from the Church of England Chaplain, Rev. J. Plowden Wardlaw, shows that the sad event took place on April 29th, and the remains were interred at Aire-sur-Lys the same day. He received a shell would in the head and everything was done for him by the medical staff and nursing sisters. The service was conducted by the Chaplain who, in his sympathetic letter to the widow, speaks highly of the deceased soldier. He was much respected in the village, where he was a useful worker in many good causes, and the sacrifice of his life, aged 41 years, has come as a shock. As the Chaplain truly says:- "he has given the most valuable in his possession, his life, for the great cause of England and what she stands for."

02 May 1919

AYRTON - In loving memory of Gunner Richard Ayrton, who died from wounds April 29th, 1918, and was buried at Ayr-sur-Lys.

"May his reward be as great as his sacrifice."

From his loving Wife and Son, 2 Oxford Terrace, Carleton.
