Richard Nutter was the son of William and Elizabeth Nutter, née Hardacre. William was born at Gisburn, Yorkshire and Elizabeth at Clitheroe, Lancashire.

1901 Gisburn, Yorkshire Census: Richard Nutter, aged 2 years, born Gisburn, son of William and Elizabeth Nutter.

1911 Gisburn, Yorkshire Census: Richard Nutter, aged 12 years, born Gisburn, son of William Nutter, widower.

The British Army Service Record for Richard Nutter exists but may be incomplete.

Richard embarked from Folkestone, 9 October 1917 and posted to the 1/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment); he joined the battalion, 18 October 1917. When this battalion was amalgamated with the 2/5th Bn., Richard was transferred to the 1/6th Bn., joining them, 29 January 1918. On the 16 June, Richard was admitted to the 1/2nd (West Riding) Field Ambulance with influenza. On recovery he joined the 2/4th Bn., on the 3 August 1918.

GISBURNE – Military Items

Private Richard Nutter, youngest son of Mr. W. Nutter, is in a Canadian Hospital in France suffering from fever.

GISBURNE – Killed in Action

A letter received on Sunday morning by Mr. W. Nutter, painter and decorator, of Gisburne, from the Captain of the Company of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment in which his youngest son, Private Richard Nutter, has been serving for eighteen months, conveyed the sad news that the latter was killed on Monday, September 2nd, after taking part in the capture of a village that had been in German hands for some time. Private Nutter was not quite twenty years of age, joining up when he was eighteen. He was a very pleasant promising boy, and much sympathy goes out to his family in their sorrow.

GISBURNE – Memorial Service

A numerous congregation gathered together at the Parish Church on Sunday morning last to pay tribute to the memory of Private Richard Nutter, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, who fell in action a fortnight ago. The Vicar (Rev. J. Heslop) officiated, and spoke feelingly of the sacrifice of young life now taking place all over the world. Members of Private Nutter’s family able to be present at the ceremony were Mr. W. Nutter (father) and the Misses E. and M. Nutter (sisters), besides relatives from other places. Special psalms and hymns were sung, and at the close of the service the organist (Miss Starkie) played the 'Dead March' in 'Saul.'

A.B. Harry Mellin, stationed in home waters, was home on leave at Rimington during the week. – Private Wooler, brother of Mrs. Frank Whittaker, Gisburne, has received his discharge from the Army with a damaged ankle. – A visit was paid to Gisburne this week by Private Jim Nelson, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, late of Windypike Farm. He looked very well and returns to France on Sunday. He saw the late Private Richard Nutter two weeks before the latter was killed in action, sickness keeping Private Nelson from going up into the trenches at the same time.

Gisburn Youth Killed
