EARBY AIRMAN ACCIDENTALLY KILLED
A sensation of pain and personal loss was created on Saturday last in Earby and district by the sad news of the death – due to a flying accident the previous day – of Second-Lieutenant Richard Welbury Shuttleworth. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. Chas. Shuttleworth, cotton manufacturer, and of Mrs. Shuttleworth, Beech Cliffe, Earby, and was 24 years of age. He joined the Army in December 1917, and on gaining his commission was attached to the Lancashire Fusiliers, with whom he served three months in France, where he was wounded last year. On recovering he was transferred to the Royal Air Force, in which he qualified as a pilot and was in the act of testing a new machine at a Midland depot when he met his death on Friday last. “Dick” as he was familiarly known amongst his intimates, was of a most amiable disposition and possessed social qualities, including musical talents, which endeared him to all who knew him.
The remains were brought home for interment at Thornton Church on Tuesday afternoon, the sad event evoking universal sympathy with the bereaved family. The chief mourners were: Mrs. Shuttleworth (mother), Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Shuttleworth (brother and sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Exley, Mr. and Mrs. Green, and Miss Annie Shuttleworth (sister), Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Shuttleworth, (Keighley), Mr and Mrs. Wm. Shuttleworth (Colne), uncles, and Second-Lieutenant Turner, R.A.F. (Halifax). The last rites were conducted by the Rev. J. F. Tanfield, M.A. (rector).
