BRINGING IN THE WOUNDED

LOCAL AMBULANCE MAN KILLED

On Tuesday evening official information was received of the death of Private Robert Hargreaves, R.A.M.C., who was killed by a shell on the Gallipoli Peninsula on August 7th, while carrying in the wounded.

The deceased was the fourth son of the late Mr. Wm. Hargreaves and of Mrs. Hargreaves, of Gardener’s-row, Sabden, but he had lived for some years at Earby, from which town he joined the R.A.M.C. at the beginning of the war. He should have sailed in the ill-fated Rohilla, which was wrecked on the Yorkshire coast off Whitby, but was unable to sail because he had not received the whole of his kit. He served in Netley Hospital during the South African War, so that he had considerable experience in the work of the R.A.M.C. He only left this country to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on July 5th. He has left a widow and one child. His only son, 11 years of age, died of diphtheria while he was on active service, and much sympathy is felt for the widow in this her double bereavement.
