LANGCLIFFE – Langcliffe Soldier's Noble Death

An official notification has been received by Mrs. Nathan Potter of Ribble Bank, Langcliffe, that her brother Private R. Thompson, of the King's Royal Lancaster Regiment, had been killed in action in France on the 29th March. The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson, of Ulverston, was about 28 years of age. He had served for some years in the Royal Lancasters, the most of the time in India. On the outbreak of war he gave up him employment in order to rejoin his regiment, along with his brother Frank. The latter, who received a bullet wound in the breast while trench digging, was recently invalided home. The intimation was accompanied by a letter from Captain Hodgson, who returned a letter and picture which were found on deceased, and expressed his regret. He states " it was a most instantaneous death and a noble one.”

THOMPSON – In loving memory of my dear brother, Pte. Robert Thompson, killed March 29th, 1915.

Dear is the grave where my brother is laid,
Sweet is the memory that never will fade;
I would give all I had without thought of pain
To gaze on the face of my dear brother again.

From his loving Sister and Brother-in-law, Mary and Nathan, Beecroft Cottages, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
