GARGRAVE – DEATH OF SERGEANT RHODES

In the prime of life, Sergt. Sam Rhodes, of the 2/6th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, died from pneumonia after about a week’s illness at his home in Park Place, Gargrave, last Friday. Deceased enlisted in November 1914, and for about three years acted as cook to the troops in France, and lately was a guard at a German prisoner’s camp. He had been at home only a short time anticipating demobilisation, when taken ill. Dr. Cameron’s assiduous attention being unavailing. He was 34 years of age and leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. Sergeant Rhodes, prior to joining up, was in the service of the Post Office, and was greatly respected. His remains were interred in the Parish Churchyard on Tuesday afternoon amid many signs of sorrow and regret. Many floral tributes were sent by relatives, friends and neighbours.
