'The Leader Local War Record 1914-15' (Nelson)

Private Spencer Elliott, of 28, Burns-street, Nelson, who was in the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment, was reported in May to have died from wounds received in action on May 6th. He was eighteen years of age, and joined the Army in August of last year.

COLNE AND NELSON TIMES WAR ALBUM: 1914-5

Private Spencer Elliott, of the 2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, whose home was at 28 Burns St. Nelson, died from wounds sustained in action on May 6th 1915. The deceased soldier, who was 18 years of age, joined the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment in August 1914. He was then a weaver, in the employ of Mr. E Wilkinson, Pendle St. Nelson. After training he was sent to France, in January, and was subsequently invalided home, with frost-bitten feet. He returned to the front on April 25th, and went uninjured through several engagements, but received fatal wounds on May 6th. His father and 2 sisters were subsequently informed by the War Office of his death.

Miscellaneous Information

(Courtesy of Doreen Osuch, née Fell)

Spencer was my great uncle, but I only obtained a photo of him when I was on a family reunion visit to Nelson two years ago - until then we only knew that my grandmother said he had hair the colour of corn. A member of LFHHS had asked me to search for her relative on the memorial outside Nelson library - I did so, but found my great uncle on the inside plaque in Nelson library. His family were living in Nelson when he died, although he was born in Skipton. His father was a carter living at Skipton Rock, before Spencer was born. He was out of work when the train began to move the materials from the quarry. My grandmother Florence Jane Elliott (married Fell) brought Spencer up as his mother died in childbirth when he was very young - she became 'mother' to all her siblings.

A book of photos was below the plaque showing Spencer's name in the upstairs of Nelson Library. He is on both the Skipton memorial and the plaque in Nelson library (a double way to remember him).
