STOCKDALE – Killed in action in France, November 27th, Pte. Thomas Birkett Stockdale, Borders, only son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Stockdale, aged 20 years.

The face we loved is now laid low,
His fond true heart is still;
The hand we clasped when we said good-bye,
Lies still in death’s cold chill.

No one knows the parting,
Or what the farewell cost;
But God and His holy angels
Have gained what we have lost.

From his sorrowing father and mother.

T.B. STOCKDALE

Private, Border Regiment.

(Killed in action November 27th, 1917).

Thomas Birkett Stockdale entered the School, as a day-boy, in September, 1911, and stayed till the Summer of 1914. He was a boy of unassuming disposition, and very dutiful. After leaving School he was employed in office work with L. & N.W. Railway Company, where he was making steady progress until called up to join the colours. After training at Great Crosby he was sent out to France with a draft on May 24th last year, and was killed on the 27th of November. He was an only child, and we offer our deep sympathy to his parents.

      Gone but not forgotten. I have had the privilege of visiting his grave at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Ypres and said hello to Thomas. We read out the verse from his funeral sheet and left him with a cross with from your friends from Sedbergh.
