BROUGHTON - Killed in action in France, Lieutenant Tom Broughton, K.O.Y.L.I., son of Mrs. Broughton, Highfield Terrace, Skipton, aged 30 years.

SKIPTON OFFICER KILLED - LIEUTENANT TOM BROUGHTON

We deeply regret to announce that a telegraphic message was received yesterday of the death in action on Tuesday of Lieutenant Tom Broughton, of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, son of the late Mr. Thomas Broughton and Mrs. Broughton, of Park House, Highfield Terrace, Skipton. No particulars are yet available, but apparently the deceased officer met his death during the great victory of the British Army between Arras and Lens on the date named.

Lieut. Broughton was 30 years of age and an officer of great promise. He joined the Artist's Rifles at the latter end of 1915, and after the customary course of training was transferred to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and went out to France soon after Christmas last year. He was educated first at Skipton Grammar School and afterwards at Monmouth's Grammar School, and subsequently became interested in a firm of cotton cloth manufacturers at Bradford. A keen athlete, he played half-back with the Skipton Rugby Union Football team and was also a member of the Skipton Golf Club. His brother George is Adjutant of the 2nd and 6th Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment.

With the bereaved mother and family there will be sincere sympathy amongst neighbours and friends of all degrees that a career of so much promise should have been thus prematurely ended. As in other similarly distressing cases, however, we trust it will be some consolation to them to know that his life has been given in a great cause, and for the service of the highest human interests.

THE LATE T. D. BROUGHTON, OF SKIPTON

With reference to the death from wounds received in action of Second-Lieutenant Thomas Dugdale Broughton, son of the late Mr. Thomas Broughton and Mrs. Broughton, of Park House, Highfield Terrace, Skipton (as briefly announced in our last issue), information has now been received that he was shot in the arm at 10-30 p.m. on Easter Monday, and that he died on the following day. As supplementary to the particulars we gave last week of the deceased officer, it might be stated that after leaving school he attended Technical College, Bradford, for several years, and subsequently joined the firm of Messrs. H.A. Gray and Co., worsted manufacturers, Valley Mills, Bradford. He joined the Artists' Rifles in November 1915, and after the usual training at Camberley Staff College, he was given a commission in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. His two brothers, Captain and Adjutant George Broughton, and Second-Lieut. and Assistant Staff Captain Jack Broughton, are also serving with the West Riding Regiment.
