‘Burnley Express’ (1 February 1919)

WOOD TOP MAN’S GALLANTRY

Mr. and Mrs. Metcalfe, of 154, Coal Clough-lane, Burnley have been officially informed by the War Office that their only son, Pte. T. Metcalfe, 48691, Lewis Machine Gun Section, 12th Batt. Manchester Regt., was killed in action at Mormal Forest on November 4, 1918. Other information from a second-lieutenant was to the effect that he sent search parties out after he had gained his objective, but no trace of Pte. T. Metcalfe could be found. Deceased had been twice previously wounded. He joined up on February 9, 1916, and went to France twelve months later. His name is on the roll of honour at Wood Top Wesleyan School. His parents would be pleased if any further information about him could be obtained from his former comrades.

In reply to Mrs. Metcalfe’s inquiries, C.Q.M.S. Deakin has written on January 21st. He says he has elicited the fact that Pte. Metcalfe was killed shortly after the attack, and that he died very nobly doing his duty. “He never flinched” (continues the officer) “or failed in the work assigned to him, however dangerous it might be, his courage and indomitably cheerful nature was very sustaining to his chums. The Mormal Forest was one of our fiercest engagements, and a good number of our lads fell. I can only conclude by offering my sincere condolences, and only hope that the noble way your son conducted himself will mitigate your grief.”
