Corporal Tom Cockshott, Skipton

The latest list of casualties also includes the name of Corporal Tom Cockshott, Machine Gun Corps, son of Mrs. Cockshott, of 49 Otley Street, Skipton, and a grandson of Mr. Christopher Wood, Otley Street, Skipton. Corporal Cockshott was wounded on September 18th last; later he was posted wounded and missing on that date, and his fate was not known definitely to his mother until a letter, date Nov. 11th, was received from Capt. and Adjutant Briggs, commanding a battalion of the Machine Gun Corps, stating that Corpl. Cockshott had been killed in action (apparently on September 18th), and buried by the Rev. J. A. Bell, chaplain of the West Yorkshire Regiment, on or about September 19th. Captain Briggs added that apparently deceased either succumbed to his wounds or was fatally hit while on the way to the dressing station.

Twenty-eight years of age, Corporal Cockshott was a butcher on his own account at Menston prior to enlisting in October, 1915, as a butcher in the Army Service Corps. Subsequently he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and had seen a good deal of fighting. We extend sympathy to the bereaved family.

We will give a photograph of the deceased soldier next week.
