Tom Dobson was the son of Sarah Dobson (born Ilkley, Yorkshire, c. 1875), the daughter of Francis and Sarah Dobson, née Mawson.

1901 Otley, Yorkshire Census: 65, Westgate - Thomas Dobson, aged 3 years, born Otley, grandson of Sarah Dobson.

1911 Otley, Yorkshire Census: 33, Westgate - Tom Dobson, aged 13 years, born Otley, son of Sarah and [stepson of] Joseph Shaw. [Sarah had married Joseph in 1903.]
