ADDINGHAM – GUNNER T. WOOD SUCCUMBS TO WOUNDS

We regret the death of Gunner T. Wood, R.F.A., which took place in hospital at Whalley on Monday, November 11th. Gunner Wood was gassed and badly burnt while serving in France about seven weeks ago, and though seriously ill he was expected to recover. His death came as a great blow to his family. Deceased, who had been out in France just over three years, was 22 years of age, and was the second son of Mr. M. Wood, farmer, Ling Park, Nessfield. The funeral took place at the Addingham Church burial ground on Saturday last. The body was carried to its last resting place by members of the Volunteer Training Corps. The church was well filled with relatives and sympathisers of the bereaved family. The Rev. J. W. Hall read the burial service in the church and at the graveside. Amongst the many floral tributes was a wreath from the hospital at Whalley.

LANGBAR – NEWS FROM SOLDIER BROTHERS

Gunner Tom Wood, of Langbar, in a letter to his aunt at Addingham, says :– “You will he surprised to hear that if am back in England again. I never expected getting over myself. I started with having pains in my knees, and I was admitted into hospital. After being in a day they took me down to Boulogne. I am now in hospital at Birmingham suffering from rheumatism, but am glad to say I am going on nicely and hope to see you soon.” A younger brother, J. Wood, who is serving on H.M.S. Vindictive in a letter to the same aunt, says he is quite well and hopes his brothers Tom and Dick come through safely. He says it is very quiet their way, and he asks for a local paper to see the news. The above letters are from the sons of Mr. Mat Wood, of Langbar. He has three sons serving. Tom is a gunner in the Wharfedale Howitzers, and Dick is in the Motor Transport. They have both been at the front since the early days of the war.
