SMITH – Killed in Naval action off Jutland, on H.M.S. Black Prince, Valentine Smith, brother of Mr. R. W. Smith, Burnsall, aged 21 years.

09 June 1916

BURNSALL SOLDIER’S FATE

Mr. R. W. Smith, postmaster of Burnsall, has received the sad intelligence that his brother, Valentine Smith, of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, aged 21 years, went down with the Black Prince during the naval battle last week. The deceased was well known in Burnsall, but his home was in Lincolnshire. He had been in the Marines for four years, and had served on the ‘Black Prince’ 2½ years. All the officers and men were lost, and the father of the young sailor received the official intimation on Wednesday morning.
