FORMER ‘CRAVEN HERALD’ REPORTER KILLED

Private William Edgar Laycock (26), South Wales Borderers, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Laycock, of 13, Winterburn Street, Keighley, was killed in action on October 1st. He was a ‘Derby’ man, and was called up in April last, going to the front during the last week in August. In civil life he was a member of the reporting staff of ‘The Southport Visitor’. Prior to taking up his appointment at Southport, Pte. Laycock was for some time a reporter on the staff of the ‘Craven Herald’, where he was held in much esteem for his genial disposition, loyalty and ability. He showed promise of making great progress in his profession, and his death is keenly lamented by his former colleagues. Pte Laycock is the first member of the ‘Herald’ staff to give his life for his country. Since the war broke out, and up to July this year, every member of the ‘Craven Herald’ reporting staff in succession has joined the Forces.
