SKIPTON CORPORAL’S DEATH FROM A BOMBING ACCIDENT – CORPORAL WM. EGGLESTON

We regret to record that Corporal Wm. Eggleston, Coldstream Guards, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Eggleston, Aireville Grange, Skipton, died on January 26th at the 19th Casualty Clearing Station, France, from injuries received in a bombing accident. In a letter to the bereaved parents, a Sister at the Clearing Station, writes:– “I regret to tell you that your son, Corporal Wm. Eggleston, has died in the Clearing Station as the result of an accidental bomb wound causing a fracture to his skull. He was admitted in an unconscious condition on the 26th January, and although everything possible was done for him he died within a few hours at 4-45 p.m. I may say how very sorry I am for you, but I know that this means very little as I am a stranger. Your son will be buried in our British cemetery at ----- and a cross with his name and number will mark the site of his last resting place.”

Corporal Eggleston was 24 years of age, and enlisted nearly two years ago, prior to when he was in business as a coal merchant in Dewsbury. After thirteen months service in France, he was home on leave in the early days of January, and he was then married to Miss A. Kay, of Dewsbury.
