Amos Clarkson (born18 April 1895) was the son of John and Hannah Clarkson, née Hartley. John was born at Silsden and Hannah at Skipton, Yorkshire.

1901 Silsden, Yorkshire Census: Swartha - Amos Clarkson, aged 5 years, son of John and Hannah Clarkson. [John and Hannah with their three children were living with John's parents, Joseph and Mary Clarkson.]

Amos Clarkson was wounded in the action in which Lance Corporal David Percival Dixon of Poplar House, Wray (qv) was killed on 22 October 1918. The War Diary of 8th Btn West Yorks lists casualties viz: ‘Officers: 1 wounded, since died of wounds. Other ranks 3 killed, 21 wounded’. The officer was Amos Clarkson.

SILSDEN – MILITARY CROSS FOR CAPTAIN CLARKSON

Captain Amos Clarkson, of the West Yorkshire Regiment, who has been awarded the Military Cross, was born at Silsden, and is the son of the late Mr. John Clarkson and Mrs. Clarkson, of Parish Ghyll, Ilkley. He was educated at the Ilkley Grammar School and before the war was on the staff of Francis Willey and Co., Bradford, where his abilities marked him out for a very successful business career. He enlisted in September, 1914, as a private, and went with a large contingent of Ilkley men to the West Riding Regiment. He received rapid promotion, attaining the rank of quartermaster-sergeant in a short time. He was then recommended for a commission, and was gazetted second-lieutenant in the West Yorkshires. He was then named in Sir Douglas Haig’s New Year’s Honours. Soon after he became a full lieutenant, and after acting captain for about three months was promoted to that rank.

SILSDEN – Capt. A. Clarkson, M.C. Wounded

Captain Amos Clarkson, M.C., son of the late Mr. John Clarkson, of Ilkley and Silsden, and son of Mrs. Clarkson, Elmscliffe, Parish Ghyll Road, Ilkley, was wounded in the thigh by shrapnel on September 20th. Captain Clarkson joined the West Riding Regiment as a private in the early days of the war, and after being some time at the Front received a commission in the West Yorkshire Regt. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action during the Messines Ridge engagement. When wounded Capt. Clarkson was in charge of a trench mortar battery. He is in hospital at Cambridge.

Other Silsden officers who have had the same distinction conferred upon them are Lieut. H. Longbottom, Lieut. W.H. Dickinson, and Captain Amos Clarkson, the latter having resided at Ilkley during recent years, although a native of Sildsen.
