Anthony Tomlinson was the son of Thomas and Margery Tomlinson, née Till. Thomas was born at Ingleton, Yorkshire and Margery at Pilling, Lancashire.

1901 Burnley, Lancashire Census: 41, May Street - Anthony Tomlinson, aged 18 years, born Ingleton, Yorkshire. [Anthony was boarding with his brother Thomas and sister-in-law Rebecca Tomlinson.]

Anthony was married to Isabella Chapman in 1901.

British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards: Pte Anthony Tomlinson, 7733, Lancashire Fusiliers & 419578, Labour Corps. Theatre of War first served in: (1) France. Date of entry therein: 25 September 1915.

Anthony first served with the 11th (Service) Bn Lancashire Fusiliers and went to France with them, disembarking at Boulogne on the 25 September 1915.

BURNLEY COLLIERS KILLED

Two Burnley colliers who have been killed are Pte. (235225) Charles Heaton, North Staffs. Regt., and Pte. (415578) A. Tomlinson, 136th Labour Company. The former worked at the Clifton Pit, and the latter at Towneley Colliery.

A PROMPT ENLISTER

Three Septembers of recent years have been marked periods in the experience of Pte. Anthony Tomlinson (36), 419578, Labour Battalion, news of whose death from wounds has this week been received by his wife at 67, Rumley-road, Burnley. He died on April 16th. Pte. Tomlinson enlisted a month after war broke out. Following upon twelve months’ training, he went on active service with his regiment, the Lancashire Fusiliers. Some seven or eight months later he fell ill with rheumatic fever, and was sent home to hospital. Then, in September of last year, he was sent to France with the Labour Battalion. He leaves a widow and three children. Formerly he was a collier at Towneley Pit. Three of Pte. Tomlinson’s nephews are serving. Of his wife’s three brothers, one Pte. John Chapman, was killed at the Dardanelles. Sergt. Joseph Chapman has been in France from the commencement of hostilities. Pte. James Chapman, Coldstream Guards, was discharged three weeks ago, after being wounded.
