Another Giggleswick Soldier Killed in Action

Lance Corporal A. G. Percy of the Royal Berks. Regiment, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Percy, Tems Street, Giggleswick, died in the 51st C.C.S., France, on the 24th June last from guns shot wounds received in action the previous day. The deceased soldier was only 19 years of age, and enlisted in January of last year, and proceeded to France last February. Previous to joining up he was employed by the Craven Lime Company. The Vicar of Giggleswick received the following letter in reference to the deceased:–- “4th July 1918. Dear Mr. Brocklehurst – In answer to your letter which has just reached me (having been sent to the 57th C.C.S.), I buried on 25th June a Lance-Corporal G. Percy, 38868, Royal Berks. Regt. He is evidently the boy you wrote about. He came into the C.C.S. late on 23rd June, and died early the next morning. I did not see him so I can tell you nothing about his last moments. I buried him in the town cemetery. His body was enclosed in a coffin and covered with the Union Jack. After the burial service I read the first verse of ‘Now the labourer’s task is o’er’; then the burial parts; saluted, and we left him to rest until the last great day. Please express my sympathy to his widowed mother. If she wishes for a photo of the grave she can get one by applying to the Director of Graves Registration, Winchester House, St James’ Square, London, S.W. – Yours sincerely, W. A. RUNDELL, C.E.”

27 June 1919

PERCY – In loving memory of our dear son, Lance-Corporal Archibald Gordon Percy, late 2/4th Royal Berks. Regiment, who died of wounds received in action, June 24th, 1918, and was laid to rest in Aire Communal Cemetery.

He left his home in perfect health,
He looked so strong and brave;
He little thought how soon he’d be
Laid in a hero’s grave.
He gives us still the dear old smile
From the photo on the wall;
We feel as if our hearts would break
When fond memories we recall.

From his loving Mother, Sister, Brothers and Maggie, Tems Street, Giggleswick, Settle.
