FARNHILL

PTE. ARCHIE SUGDEN KILLED IN ACTION

Deep regret was felt last week-end in the villages of Farnhill and Kildwick when news arrived that one of their former boys, Pte. Archie Sugden, of the Grenadier Guards, had been killed in action on Oct. 9th. Private Sugden was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sugden, of Sackville Road, Dewsbury, and formerly of Farnhill. Private Sugden’s parents were well known in the Kildwick parish. Mr. Sugden was also very well known in Skipton, having been employed as clerk for same 20 years in the Midland Railway offices. The family removed to Dewsbury some 11 years ago, he being at present head clerk at the Dewsbury Midland Railway offices. The parents have received letters from their son’s comrades stating that their battalion had attained their object, which they held when a shell came over and killed their friend Archie. The deceased, who was 21 years of age, joined the army in October, 1916, and went out in April of the present year. Prior to joining up he was employed at Messrs. Chadwick Bros., gentlemen’s outfitter, Dewsbury, who have paid their tribute to the deceased’s worth of character. Many expressions of sympathy have been received by the parents in their great loss.
