GARGRAVE - PRIVATE ARTHUR BRADLEY KILLED IN ACTION

Last weekend Mr. Edward Bradley, of Old Hall Gardens, Gargrave, received official notice that his son Arthur, whose photograph we reproduce, had been killed on the field of battle. He was a private in the Durham Light Infantry, enlisting at Halifax on May 11, 1916, and went into training at Rugeley Camp in Staffordshire, where he was transferred into the 1st Training Reserves, still remaining at Rugeley. On December 19th he was sent to France, since which date he has corresponded with his parents, occasionally giving some of his experiences of life in the trenches. He was 20 years of age on February 9th and was killed on February 26th. Prior to enlisting he worked for his father, who is a carting agent, and was a very quiet lad. His death was very feelingly referred to on Sunday night at the Parish Church by the Rev. A.V. Blunt, vicar, who said that hitherto Gargrave had been almost immune from war fatalities. They all had been saddened during the last few days to hear that one of their Gargrave men had been killed. They would all honour his memory and feel proud of him as he died doing his duty, and he felt sure all hearts would go out in sympathy to his family in its loss and time of trial. At the close of the impressive service, the congregation stood while Mr. E. Burland played the 'Dead March' on the organ.
