CRAVEN AND THE WAR

Newchurch Soldier Wins Military Medal

Mrs. Pickles, of Newchurch-in-Pendle, has received official intimation from General Rawlinson, commander of the Fourth Army, that her son Arthur has been awarded the Military Medal for gallant Service in the field. Pte. Pickles, who is 22 years of age, joined the army early in 1916, and proceeded overseas in June of the following year. He took part in several of the heaviest engagements last year, and was in the thick of the fighting during the German spring offensive in March. Unfortunately he has been missing since that date, and his relatives have as yet received no official information regarding his whereabouts. His officer, in a letter to his parents, states that when last seen Pte. Pickles was wounded in the leg, but was still operating his machine-gun against the approaching enemy. The missing soldier, who is the son of the late Mr. John Pickles, antique furniture dealer, and some time sexton of the church, was well-known in the Pendle Forest district. He was connected with St. Mary’s Church, was secretary of the Sunday-school, and was educated at the Newchurch Day School. His many friends join in hoping that his recently widowed mother will reserve more reassuring news concerning him in the near future. He is well-known in Skipton and the dales.
