[Untitled article]

Yesterday, a letter was received containing the information that Private Arthur Stones, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Stones, Waddington, died from wounds on the 3rd inst. A hostile aeroplane dropped a bomb on a tent, as a result of which four lives have been lost. Deceased was formerly a tackler at Shaw Bridge mill, and joined the 2nd Corps, Cyclist Battalion, last April. He resided with his wife in Scott terrace.

“LIKED AND RESPECTED”

CYCLIST ARTHUR STONES

There was general regret at Waddington when it was announced in last week’s ‘Advertiser’ that Private Arthur Stones, 2nd Corps Cyclist Batt., had been killed, for he was very well known in the village, where his parents still reside. The information came from an officer who wrote to Mrs. Stones on the 6th inst. to the following effect:

“I deeply regret to have to inform you that your son died of wounds on the evening of the 3rd inst. He was in a tent, with three others, on which an aeroplane bomb was dropped, and your son was severely wounded. He died on the way to the dressing station. It may be some little consolation to you to know that he did not suffer at all, as he was unconscious at the time. The officers and men of the Company join with me in sending you deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement. Private Stones was a good soldier and, while with us, made himself liked and respected by both officers and man. He is buried in a British Military Cemetery, near Ypres.”

Deceased was an overlooker at Shaw Bridge mill and lived with his wife in Scott-terrace. He became a soldier on the 16th April last, and his death creates another gap in the list of devoted and earnest workers connected with the Congregational Church and school.
