IN MEMORIAM

In Loving Memory of Private William Bateman Hewitt, 20,474, 6th East Lancashire Regt., killed in action in Mesopotamia, April 19th, 1916, aged 18 years.

If we could have raised his dying head
And heard his last farewell,
The grief would not have been so hard
For those who loved him well.

Too far away thy grave to see,
But not too far to think of thee.

–From Father, Mother, Sisters and Brothers.
Late of 8, Russell street, Clitheroe.

Miscellaneous Information

(Kindly supplied by Kenneth Hewitt)

The family moved from Clitheroe (from where Bateman was enlisted into the 6th Bn East Lancashire Regt) to Salterforth in the early years of the Great War because my grandfather (John Robert Hewitt) got a job as an engine driver in the internal railway system of the munitions depot at Foulridge.
