BARNOLDSWICK – STILL ROOM FOR MORE

A letter has been received in Barnoldswick from a Nelson young man, Lance-Corporal R. Heseltine, of the Dragoon Guards, now attached to the 1st Leicester Regiment in France. He tells of a very narrow escape that he had on September 30th. He, along with three of his comrades, volunteered to help another Regiment to carry their wounded in. When they had about half finished their task they were spotted by the Germans, who sent over a couple of shells, killing two of them, and seriously wounding the others, Lance-Corpl. Heseltine being the only one left unhurt. He concludes his letter by saying that the Germans must not yet have made the shell with his number on, and that there is still room for more recruits as there is still plenty of work to be done.
