Private Bernard Fletcher, Skipton

Private Bernard Fletcher, East Yorkshire Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fletcher, 5 Clifford Street, Skipton, who was killed in action on August 16th, joined up in June, 1917, and had been out in France since April last. Nineteen years of age he was formerly a porter at the Skipton Railway Station. In a letter of sympathy to the bereaved parents, Lieut. G. W. Bladen says that deceased was a very good soldier and will he hard to replace. “He was always there when wanted,” he continues, “and will be greatly missed amongst his comrades, and his death will also be a great loss to the Company and Battalion in which he served.” A brother, Private W. H. Fletcher, is serving with the Army Veterinary Corps in France.

LOCAL HEROES OF THE WAR

Pte. B. Fletcher Killed

News has been received that Pte. Bernard Fletcher, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fletcher, of 5, Clifford Street, Skipton, was killed in action on August 16th. Lieut. G.W. Bladen, in a letter to the deceased soldier’s parents, states:– “Your son was a very good soldier, and will be very hard to replace He was always there when wanted, and will be greatly missed among his comrades, and also a loss to the company, and battalion in which he served. He was well liked by all his officers, and N.C.O.’s whom he served under, and the whole of his officers and company send their deepest sympathy to you in your distress.”

Pte. Fletcher, who was 19 years of age, enlisted in June, 1917, and had been out in France since April last. He was formerly employed as a porter on the Midland Railway at Skipton. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher have another son, Pte. W.H. Fletcher, who is serving is France with the Army Vet. Corps.

Posthumous Honour for Skipton Soldier

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fletcher, of 5, Clifford Street, Skipton, have received from the 3rd Division Commander a parchment stating that their son, Pte. Bernard Fletcher, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed in action on August 16th, had been awarded the Military Medal for gallant conduct and devotion to duty in the field on June 28th last. Pte. Fletcher, who was 19 years of age, enlisted in June, 1917, and had been out in France since April last. He was formerly employed as a porter on the Midland Railway at Skipton.
