Bertrand William Bland was the son of Harry and Annie Elizabeth Bland, née Dennis. Harry was born at Bushey, Hertfordshire and Annie at Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire. Bertrand's brother, Private Francis John Bland, was killed in action whilst serving with the 8th (Service) Bn Leicestershire Regiment.

SKIPTON RAILWAYMAN DIES FROM GAS POISONING

The news of the death of Private B. Bland, Machine Gun Corps, Bedford Regiment, on October 21st 1917, was received with deep regret by his many friends in Skipton. Deceased came to Skipton from Sheffield [Shefford], and was employed by the Midland Railway Company as a point holder for about a year before enlisting on the outbreak of war. He died, as stated, on Sunday, from the effects of gas poisoning.

We reproduce a photograph of Private B. Bland, Machine Gun Corps, Bedford Regiment, who died on October 21st from the effects of gas poisoning as stated in our last issue. Deceased, who was employed by the Midland Railway Co. for about a year prior to the outbreak of war came to Skipton from Shefford, Beds.

SKIPTON SOLDIER'S DEATH

Private B. Bland, of the Machine Gun Corps of the Berkshire Regiment, late of Skipton, formerly of Sheffield [Shefford], died on Sunday, October 21st, in France, as a result of gas poisoning. About twelve months prior to the outbreak of was he came to Skipton from Sheffield [Shefford], and was employed by the Midland Railway Company as a paint [sic] holder.
