SKIPTON POLICEMAN PAYS THE PRICE - GUNNER CHARLES BATLEY

News was received in Skipton last week that Gunner Charles Batley, R.G.A., one of the 22 police officers from the East Staincliffe Division who have joined the Forces, was killed in action on October 26th. He enlisted in April this year and had been at the Front about three weeks.

Twenty-six years of age and a married man with one child, deceased was a native of Barnsley, where he worked on the railway before joining the police force at the latter end of 1913. He came to Skipton on February 27th 1914, and was held in high esteem by his superiors and the other members of the local police force, as well as by the general public. Possessed of many estimable qualities, he was regarded as a smart officer and one who was likely to rise high in the Force.

CRAVEN AND THE WAR

We give a photograph of Gunner Charles Batley, R.G.A., who, as reported last week, was killed in action on October 26th. He was one of the 22 police officers from this district who have joined the Forces. Twenty-six years of age, he enlisted in April 1917, and had been at the Front about three weeks. He leaves a widow and one child.

SKIPTON CONSTABLE KILLED IN ACTION

Gunner Charles Batley, of the Royal Garrison Artillery, husband of Mrs. Batley, of 18, Milton Street, Skipton, was killed in action on October 26th, it being understood that his death was instantaneous and that he suffered no pain. Gunner Batley, who was only 26 years of age, was a name of Barnsley. He joined the police force in December, 1913, and came to Skipton in February, 1914. He was looked upon as a very straightforward young man, and would have made an excellent officer. He had also assisted in the clerical work of the office. Prior to joining the police force he was employed on the railway at Barnsley. He enlisted last April, and had only been in France about six weeks. He was one of the 22 men serving from the East Staincliffe Petty Sessional Division.
