Charles Simpson was the son of William and Jane Ann Simpson, née Willan and brother of L/Corporal John Simpson (18/1328) (q.v.). Their father was born at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire and mother at Kirk Merrington, Co. Durham. William and Jane's son, Fred, served for over a year with the East Lancashire Regiment in France and/or Belgium. He was discharged on the 24 August 1916 for being underage.
