Clifford Stockdale was the son of Richard and Sara Stockdale, née Laycock and brother of Lieutenant William Stockdale (q.v.). Their father was born at Skipton and mother at Baildon, Yorkshire.

1901 Blundellsands, Lancashire Census: The Pharmacy, Blundellsands Road West - Clifford Stockdale, aged 2 years, born Great Crosby, Lancashire, son of Richard and Sara Stockdale.

1911 Blundellsands, Lancashire Census: Aireville, Blundellsands Road West - Clifford Stockdale, aged 12 years, born Blundellsands, son of Sara and stepson of George Harold Cole.

STOCKDALE – April 10th, killed in action, aged 19 years, Private Clifford Stockdale, K.L.R. (attached South Lancs), youngest son of the late Richard Stockdale and Mrs. G. H. Cole, ‘Airevilles,’ Blundellsands.

THE ROLL OF HONOUR – Private Clifford Stockdale

Private Clifford Stockdale, of the Liverpool Scottish, killed on April 10th, was the youngest son of the late Mr. Richard Stockdale, and Mrs. Cole, of Blundell Sands, Liverpool. He was severely wounded on the 3rd August 1916, and was in hospital and convalescent camps until the lst of April this year. He arrived in France on April 5th and was attached to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

His mother, daughter of Mr. Matthew Laycock, of Morecambe and Skipton, received confirmation of the death of her eldest son, Second-Lieutenant Wilban Stockdale, of the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, who was killed on the 3rd August last year, within a few days of receiving news of the death of her youngest son. The only surviving son, Second Lieutenant Eric Stockdale, is in the Royal Air Service.

THE ROLL OF HONOUR – Pte. C. Stockdale

We reproduce a photograph of Private Clifford Stockdale, of the Liverpool Scottish, youngest son of the late Mr. Richard Stockdale, and of Mrs. Cole, of Blundellsands, Liverpool, killed in action on April 10th last, as briefly reported in our last issue. The deceased soldier was a grandson of Mr. Matthew Laycock, of Skipton and Morecambe, and is the second son of the late Mr. Richard Stockdale to sacrifice his life for the common good.
