DRAUGHTON – Khaki Visitors

The village assumed quite a military tone last week-end owing to the presence of four of our gallant soldiers who were home on short leave. They included 2nd Lieut V. Gardam, York and Lancasters, who is stationed at Tynemouth, and his brother, Gunner G. F. H. Gardam, East Riding Royal Garrison Artillery, who is stationed at Sunk Island, Beverley, Hull; also Staff-Sergeant D. A. Sim, Army Ordnance Corps, who is now stationed at Woolwich and expects shortly to be sent to France; and Gunner Thomas Wilman, West Riding Royal Field Artillery, now stationed at Otley. They all seemed in excellent spirits and anxious to get to the front.

DRAUGHTON – Death of Mr. D. A. Sim

We regret to announce the death at Draughton, on Saturday, of Mr. David Anthony Sim, late Staff-Sergeant in the Army Ordnance Corps. He was the son of the late Rev. D. Sim, of Bradford, and had been a resident in Draughton for 23 years. He enlisted for foreign service at the age of fifty-five in July, 1915, and was stationed at Woolwich, and was also on coast defence at Tynemouth Castle, where his health broke down. In a letter to Mr. Sim his Colonel stated:– “It is such men as you that the country needs.” Prior to the interment on Wednesday at Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford, a service was conducted by Archdeacon Cook at Draughton. Numerous floral tributes were sent by friends. Deceased leaves a widow and one daughter, for whom much sympathy is expressed locally.

DRAUGHTON – The Late Mr. D.A. Sim

A beautiful service was held in St. Augustine’s Church, Draughton, on Sunday evening, in memory of the late Mr. David Anthony Sim. A crowded congregation of almost a hundred people came to pay their last sad tribute to the memory of a true patriot. In his sermon, Mr. J.A. Slingsby said that deceased was a quiet and reticent man, but a true patriot. When most men at the age of fifty-five might have excused themselves, he enlisted for foreign service. Owing to an accident and the privations he went through, he was stricken by a fatal illness, which was bravely and patiently borne. Such devotion to duty and to the country’s call was, and must be, an example to them all. Miss Chadwick, the organist, concluded the service by playing the Dead March in ‘Saul.’
