Keen regret was expressed throughout the village when it became known that Corporal Edward Ramskill, Northumberland Fusiliers, youngest son of Mrs. Ramskill, of Highfield Terrace, was killed in action on the 23rd of October. A letter from his captain conveys deep sympathy to the mother and states:– “He died whilst leading his section in an attack on a village and was buried near the spot where he fell. He was a fine specimen of true British grit, and his place will indeed be hard to fill: he was greatly liked by both officers and men.” Prior to enlisting he was assistant grocer for Mr. John Satterthwaite.
