WAITE – In loving in memory of our dear boy, Private Edward Waite, killed in action August 24th, aged 23 years.

We pictured you safe returning,
We longed to clasp your hand;
But God has postponed the meeting
Till we meet in the better land.

From Mother, Sisters, Brothers, and Minnie, 8 Spring Terrace, Earby.

Private Edward Waite, Earby

Private Edward Waite, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, killed August 24th, was 23 years of age and the second son of the late Mr. James S. Waite, of Moor Hall Farm, and Mrs. Waite, 8 Spring Terrace, Earby. He joined the Army Veterinary Corps in December, 1914, and went out to France the same month, remaining in the Veterinary Corps until January last when he was transferred to the Royal Lancasters. A letter received from the chaplain states that Private Waite, along with several of his comrades, were engaged in wiring a new post in the front line when he was killed instantly by a shell. His body was sent down the line and given Christian burial in the quiet, peaceful little military cemetery at Houchin, a beautiful spot well kept by a staff of old soldiers. His funeral was attended by many of his comrades, and was conducted with full military honours.
