SKIPTON PETTY SESSIONS

A DISGRACEFUL ASSAULT

Ernest Bishop, a labourer, of Skipton, was summoned at the instance of Elizabeth Biss, for common assault.

The complainant, who resides in Broughton Road, Skipton, said Bishop lodged in the same house as her. Last Saturday night just after 11 o'clock the defendant came in drunk and hit the complainant, knocking her into the fireplace. He hit her on the right side of the jaw, and then on the left side. Mrs. Rain, who lives next door, said that on Saturday night she heard a big thud. She rushed into the house and saw Bishop hitting the floor with a fire shovel. Eventually Bishop hit Elizabeth Biss in the face and knocked her on to the bed. Witness lifted her up, and seeing the defendant afterwards told him he was a coward. He answered "Coward be -."

Wm. W. Russell, who lives at the same house as Bishop, said he saw the defendant knock the complainant into the fireplace twice.

The Chairman remarked that it appeared to have been a most disgraceful assault, and the man would be fined 20s. and costs, or one month in default.
