SKIPTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENT FATALLY WOUNDED

We are also sorry to state that Private Ernest Edward Carter, Northumberland Fusiliers, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Henry Carter, 5 Neville Street, Skipton, died in No. 8 Stationary Hospital, France, from multiple gunshot wound and amputation of the right leg, on March 27th. Only 19 years of age deceased was called up on April 20th last year and had been out at the Front since February 10th last. While attending Water Street Council School he won a Petyt Scholarship, with which he proceeded to Skipton Grammar School, where he further distinguished himself. He won a County Minor Scholarship and also a Bursarship, and but for the war would have entered the teaching profession. He was a teacher and assistant secretary at the Gargrave Road Primitive Methodist Sunday School. The Battalion Chaplain, in a letter to the parents says that by his death the country has lost a brave soldier, and adds that he buried him on March 27th "in a pretty little cemetery whore so many of our brave boys already lie." Another son of Mr. and Mr,. Carter, Sergeant Arthur Carter, is in France with the West Riding Regiment.

Pte. Ernest E. Carter Dies of Wounds

Pte. Ernest Edward Carter, of the Northumberland Fusiliers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Henry Carter, of 5, Neville Street, Skipton, died on March 27th at No. 8, Stationary Hospital, France, from multiple gun-shot wounds and amputation of the right leg. In a letter to his parents a chaplain stated that the country had lost a brave soldier, and added that he was buried on March 27th in a pretty little cemetery where so many of our brave boys already were. A nurse at the hospital also wrote stating that the chance of saving his life was hopeless from the beginning. Pte. Carter, who was 19 years of age, went out to France in February last. From the Water Street School he won Petyt Scholarship, entitling him to go to the Skipton Grammar School, where he was a student up to his joining the colours. While at the Grammar School he won a County Minor Scholarship, and afterwards won a bursarship. It was his intention of going in for the teaching profession. He was closely connected with the Gargrave Road Primitive Methodist Church, being a teacher and assistant secretary of the Sunday School. Mr. and Mrs. Carter have another son serving in France, Sergt. Arthur Carter, of the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment.
