SILSDEN - PTE. FRANK CARTER KILLED IN ACTION

Pte. Frank Carter, Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment, only son of Mrs. Carter, 49, Tufton Street, Silsden, has been killed in action in France. In a letter to the deceased soldier's mother, Sec.-Lieut. H. Thornton states:- "On behalf of the officers, N.C.O.s and men of your son's company, I desire to express to you and your family our deepest sympathy in the loss of your son in action during the recent advance. It will perhaps be some consolation to you to know that he was killed instantly when firing his gun. It can truly be said that he died whilst doing his duty, and I can assure you that we out here, as well as his family and friends at home, feel the loss of a gallant comrade."

Pte. Carter, who was 24 years of age, enlisted in March 1916, and had been out in France about eleven months. He had previously been wounded in the neck, but was soon back in the trenches again. He was formerly an assistant at Messrs. Horne Bros., grocers, Shipley.
