Ernest Sherwood was the son of William and Jane Sherwood, formerly Crabtree, née Hartley. William was born in the Pocklington/Market Weighton area and Jane at Harden near Bingley, Yorkshire.

Gunner Ernest Sherwood, Skipton

News was received on Sunday by Mrs. Sherwood, 58 Russell Street, Skipton, that her husband, Gunner Ernest Sherwood, R.F.A., had been killed in action in France on March 23rd. Twenty-eight years of age, Gunner Sherwood enlisted on April 2nd 1917, and went out to France in October. He was formerly a weaver in the employ of Messrs. Clegg, and was a member of the local Tent of Rechabites. Deceased’s brother, Pte. Fred Sherwood, and brother-in-law, Pioneer E. J. Rampling, are also serving. Another brother-in-law, Pte. Willie Rampling, was killed in action some time ago.

Gunner E. Sherwood Killed

News was received on Sunday last by Mrs. Sherwood, 58, Russell Street, Skipton, that her husband, Gunner Ernest Sherwood, R.F.A., had been killed in action on March 23rd. Gunner Sherwood, who was 23 years of age, enlisted in April. 1917, and went out to France in October. He was formerly employed by Messrs. Clegg’s, and was a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites. A brother. Pte. Sherwood, and a brother-in-law, Pioneer E. J. Rampling, are also serving. Another brother-in-law. Pte. Willie Rampling, was killed in action some time ago.
