CONONLEY – LOST ON A MINE-SWEEPER

A letter has been received by Mrs. Speight, stating that Seaman Ernest Speight lost his life at sea on January 18th. The letter states that the mine-sweeper, to which he was attached, struck a mine and all hands were lost. The case is particularly sad, as in his last letter to his wife at Christmas he said he hoped to have a leave after his return from a mine-sweeping cruise on which he was about to set out. Seaman Speight, up to the time of joining the Navy about last May, was employed as a porter at the Cononley Railway Station, and resided in Aire View.
